What is a good 3 day itinerary for Koh Samui with families?

'First time in Samui with young kids, staying at Bandara in Bo Phut, and one of our kids still naps daily, what does a realistic 3 days actually look like?'

Day 1: Temples and Choeng Mon beach

• Morning: Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem
• Midday: Carnival Beach Club at Choeng Mon
• Afternoon: Back to the hotel, nap and pool time

Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem sit close together and are both genuinely flexible in how long they take, which makes them easy to fit around a young family's pace rather than the other way round. Wat Plai Laem is particularly good with kids, it's open and spacious, and there are fish to feed from coin machines, bring change. Dress appropriately for both temples.

Once you're done at the temples, head to Carnival Beach Club, on Choeng Mon beach, our pick for families on this beach specifically. It has a shallow pool and small play area for younger kids, plus paddleboards and jet skis are available on the beach if anyone older wants something more active. Back to the hotel for a nap and pool time once you've had enough.

Day 2: Elephants and a loop around the island

• Morning: choose an elephant experience in Bo Phut, or Samui Elephant Kingdom in Taling Ngam
• If going further: scenic loop, east on the way there, west on the way back
• Late afternoon: swim and dinner at Karma Two Palms in Bangpor
• Note: the fullest day of the trip, nothing else planned around it

You've got two good options here, depending on how far you want to go.

Staying close, there's an elephant experience right in Bo Phut, no long drive needed. Samui Elephant Haven.  You can choose a hands-on experience feeding the elephants, or simply visit the cafe and watch the elephants roam freely while you eat breakfast or lunch, a good choice if you'd rather keep the day simple. Book ahead, this place gets busy.

Going further, Samui Elephant Kingdom in Taling Ngam is fully ethical, observation-only with a raised skywalk, no riding, and worth the trip if you fancy seeing more of the island.

If you drive yourself, it's about a 35-minute drive each way, easily enough for a car nap if needed, and a good excuse to make a loop of it rather than driving there and back the same way.

Go to Samui Elephant Kingdom first, take the scenic route, head east on the way there and west on the way back, effectively a loop around the island rather than a straight there-and-back and you make sure you're on the right side of the island for sunset on the way back.  

It's not strenuous, just a change of scenery through parts of Samui you won't otherwise see on this trip.

On the way back, stop at Karma Two Palms in Bangpor. It's a relaxed beach club rather than a straightforward restaurant, so if you're arriving in the late afternoon, it's a good spot for the kids to have a swim first before you settle in for dinner and the sunset. Genuinely good with kids, plenty of space to run around, and a long stretch of beach. This is a fuller day than the rest of the itinerary, so don't plan anything else around it, let the elephants and the drive be the whole day.

Day 3: A slower finish

• Morning: genuinely slow, no need to be out early
• Afternoon: optional, revisit a favourite beach or pool
• Evening: Fisherman's Village, dinner at the market
• CocoTam's fire show: arrive 30-45 minutes early for a beach seat

After yesterday, keep today genuinely easy. Start slower than the rest of the trip, there's no need to be out early, a relaxed morning at the hotel or pool is exactly right after a bigger day. Once everyone's ready, ease back into the normal rhythm, if there's energy for it, revisit the favourite beach or pool from earlier in the trip.

Fisherman's Village only really comes alive in the evening, so it's deliberately placed here rather than as a morning wander. It's pram-friendly, so it's an easy one with young kids, eat at the market itself, plenty of options to wander and pick something.

For the fire show at CocoTam's, aim to arrive 30-45 minutes before the 7pm showing to get a seat on the beach. Kids can play in the sand while you settle in, and the parents get a cocktail before the show starts. 

What do we do if it starts raining?

If you get caught out and rain disrupts your plans, be assured that rain often comes thick and fast in Koh Samui, you can wait it out at several good options for families during the rain.
