How many days do you need in Koh Samui?
Stay at least three days, so you can settle in rather than keep packing and unpacking. Seven days is a good length, and two weeks is not too long: with longer you can go deeper and even split your stay between the north and south of the island. Plan each day around one area, and do not over plan.

Get your map →Stay longer than you think you need to. Three days is the least we would suggest, because any less and you spend the whole trip packing and unpacking and never quite settle. Seven days is the sweet spot, and with two weeks you can really get to know the island.
Here is how we think about it, from choosing where to base yourself to why we say do not over plan.
We are biased, and we will admit it. We live on Koh Samui and we love it, so take what suits you.
How many days is right?
| Stay | What you get | Base |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | The minimum. Time to settle in and enjoy one area | One base |
| 7 days | The sweet spot. Downtime and beach time, plus room to explore properly | One base, planned by area |
| 2 weeks | Time to go deeper than the usual tick list | Two bases, north and south |
Why not less than three days?
Because you never settle. With one or two nights you are always arriving or leaving, unpacking and repacking, and Koh Samui is an island that asks you to slow down. Three days is the least that lets you do that.
How do you plan your days?
Plan your days by area. Crossing the island eats into your beach time and, if you are using Grab, the fares add up. Pick one part of the island for the day and stay there. The good news is that getting around is fairly straightforward, so you do not need to plan it to the minute. For the options, see how to get around Koh Samui.
How much should you plan?
Less than you think. Leave space for slow mornings, beach time and a massage, and lean into island life. That is what the holiday is for.
Is it worth going beyond the obvious?
Yes. Koh Samui rewards the curious. Not everything here is picture perfect, and some of the best places do not look like much from the outside, so do not let that put you off. A lot of the best places are not on everyone's top five Instagram list. Our Beyond the Obvious free map is a good place to start.
Is two weeks too long in Koh Samui?
People often ask us if two weeks is too long. It is not. Two weeks gives you time to go beyond the usual Samui tick list, to stay in two parts of the island, and still have lazy days on the beach.
Should you split your stay?
If you have the time, you could even do two stops, one in the north and one in the south, because each area is different. Koh Samui is bigger than most people realise, with far more to do than the usual tick list suggests.
In the busier north there are more cafes, restaurants, beach clubs and things to do than you will get through. In the south you slow down and settle into the tropical island feel. Where you stay shapes your holiday, so it is worth choosing the area for the kind of trip you want.
Our pairing would be Bo Phut, near Fisherman's Village, to start, then Taling Ngam at the end of the holiday.

Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi have a more remote, tropical island feel, with sunset views, which makes for a lovely way to finish.

The trade-off: they are quieter, with fewer places to eat and longer drives. That is the price of the sunsets and the tropical feel.
