Which area of Koh Samui is best for couples?
It depends on the trip. Fisherman's Village in Bo Phut is the pick if you want more to do in the evenings, Choeng Mon for a calm and private base, Chaweng if you want nightlife, and Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam for a true escape with sunsets.

Get your map →The single most important thing to know before choosing where to stay on Koh Samui: the island is bigger than it looks on a map. Getting between areas takes time, so the area you choose shapes your whole trip.
For couples, the choice usually comes down to three things: more to do in the evenings, a calm and private base, or a true escape with sunsets. Each part of the island does one of these best, and this guide helps you pick.
The north coast
The north coast has the widest choice for couples, from the evening buzz of Fisherman's Village to quieter, more local beaches, and all of it is within reach of the island's top things to do. Choeng Mon and Fisherman's Village are about 15 minutes apart.
Fisherman's Village, Bo Phut
If you want more action around you, Fisherman's Village is great. It is walkable, with waterfront restaurants, a night market and a fire show, and plenty of hotels and cafes. The trade off is the beach: the sand is coarse, so it isn't the place for a full beach day.

Choeng Mon
Choeng Mon is slightly quieter, with a good beach, a soft-sand cove, and some very private places to stay. The trade off is the evenings: there is not as much going on as in Fisherman's Village, so for more choice you take a short trip there.

Maenam
Maenam is underrated. It has a lovely, long beach with a calm entry into the sea, things to do, and a more local feel, a bit more like the Koh Samui from before the big resorts, but you are not a million miles away from the top things to do on the island. It is home to Four Seasons, which is ultimate luxury, and the quieter Ban Tai side has Moorea, a small adults-only (16+) boutique stay. Skip it if you want nightlife on the doorstep.

Bang Por, in Maenam
Bang Por is also in Maenam, and it is another underrated beach, much quieter. There are a couple of low key beach clubs and a few restaurants. It is a little further from the busier areas than the main Maenam beach, but still not a million miles away. It is worth a visit even if you stay elsewhere, and a base only if you don't need lots to do on the doorstep.

Bangrak
Bangrak is the ferry port for Koh Phangan and it is often overlooked. It has great sunsets, cafes and beach clubs, and it is home to Big Buddha. The beach is fine but isn't the best on Samui, so it suits couples who want the sunsets and the places along the seafront more than a big beach day. Expect roadworks, and roadside parking is harder here than elsewhere.

For longer stays
If you have the time, each area is different, and splitting your stay lets you enjoy both the busier north and the slower south. We would pair Bo Phut, near Fisherman's Village, with Taling Ngam or Lipa Noi at the end of the holiday. Not sure how long to stay? See how many days you need in Koh Samui.
The east coast
Chaweng
Chaweng is for couples who want everything on their doorstep, with lots of choice of restaurants and beach clubs. It is the island's busiest area and very popular for nightlife, so if you are up for a party, this is the place to be. The beach is long, white sand and very pretty, but busy in the central areas, and it gets quieter the further north or south you go. Chaweng is extremely tourist focused, which is both a good and a bad thing, and it is well positioned for exploring the rest of the island. Anantara Lawana sits on the quieter north end of the beach.
Think twice if you want an element of seclusion, or want to avoid party nightlife. For more choice in the evenings without the party, Fisherman's Village is the better fit.

South and west coast

Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam are the pick for couples who want a true escape. The trade off is that there are not as many restaurants and cafes to choose from, and they are further away from the top attractions in Koh Samui. What you get in return is quieter beaches and amazing sunsets. Allow 45 minutes to an hour from the airport, and plan on a car or scooter.
Lipa Noi
Lipa Noi has a slower pace, a quiet beach and great sunsets, with slightly more going on than in Taling Ngam, and Nathon, an often overlooked town, close by. Sunset horse riding on the beach is the main activity. At certain times of the year the tide goes far out, so it is good to be aware of that.

Taling Ngam
Taling Ngam is the more remote of the two, with sunsets over the five islands and Ang Thong National Marine Park. Evenings are simple: watch the sunset, have a few drinks, then head back to your hotel. It also works well as a few relaxed days at the end of a trip, after sightseeing up north.
