What makes Choeng Mon work for families

There's something quietly reassuring about a beach you can actually relax on with kids, and Choeng Mon's cove shape does a lot of that work for you. The sand is soft, the water sits calm most of the year, and the road behind the beach is easier for prams than many other parts of the island, without constantly checking over your shoulder for traffic. It's one of the easier parts of the island to just be in, rather than constantly managing.

The trade off is that you won't find yourself in the thick of anything here. There's no busy nightlife, no strip of bars competing for attention. For most families, that's exactly the point. You get a settled, easy-going base for the day-to-day, and when you do fancy a livelier evening, Bophut Fisherman's Village is close enough to dip into without needing to pack up and move.

Where to eat with kids

Khun Yak is the easiest recommendation in the area. It's laid back, traditional Thai dining in a big open space with a lawn and a play area tucked at the back, the kind of place where nobody's watching the clock waiting for a meal to be over. The play area is simple rather than new, but it does exactly what it needs to, and there's enough room in the restaurant that young kids can wander a little without anyone minding. The menu has enough range that parents eat well too, which isn't always a given.

Sol Bakery, Brew and Bites is the one for brunch or a slow lunch. It's not Thai food, more of a relaxed café and bakery menu, and it has a loyal enough following that it can get busy. Worth the wait if you catch it at a peak time.

Carnival Beach Club, in the middle of the beach, is built with family days in mind. There's a small play area, a shallow pool alongside a regular one, and direct beach access, plus food and drinks good enough that parents won't feel like they're settling.

Pi Beach Club, further along the peninsula, leans more toward an evening out. Expect a DJ or live violin on a given night, good food, and a spot right on the beach so kids can still run around while the adults enjoy something closer to a proper dinner. It's popular enough to be worth booking ahead, or arriving early.

Things to do beyond the beach

The beach itself is reason enough to come, and it genuinely holds up for a full day. Paddleboards and jet skis are available for the older kids, and the occasional evening fire show gives everyone a nice excuse for a slow walk along the sand as the light goes.

About ten minutes by car takes you to Wat Plai Laem, a temple with an open layout that lets kids move around a little while still keeping things respectful. There are fish to feed from coin machines, ten baht a go, so it's worth carrying some change. Dress appropriately, as you would for any temple.

Big Buddha sits close by too, easy to fold into the same trip if time is tight.

For a change of pace, Thongson Bay is worth the detour. It's quieter, with just one restaurant and not much else in the way of facilities, and the sand turns rocky rather than soft. What you get in return is far fewer people, which makes it a nice contrast rather than a full day out on its own.

If the evening calls for something livelier, Bophut Fisherman's Village is close enough for an easy trip, with its own dining scene if nothing in Choeng Mon appeals on a given night.

Getting around
